Jana R. Alley recently retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force after 24 years of highly decorated service. Throughout her career, she served as a Political Affairs and Intelligence Officer for three Combatant Commands, and deployed 5 times in support of US, allied and United Nations operations worldwide.
Ms Alley received her commission through ROTC in 1999 after serving terms of enlistment in both the Active Duty Air Force and the Air National Guard as an F-16 Avionics Technician. During her officer career, she served as an Information Warfare Officer, deploying to the Combined Air Operations Center, Special Operations Liaison Element, Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom; was assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron, Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ as the Squadron Intelligence Officer, deploying to Kirkuk AB, Iraq; served as the East-South Africa Branch Chief and as the North-Transregional Africa Branch Chief, Intelligence and Knowledge Directorate-Molesworth, Joint Analysis Center, RAF Molesworth, United Kingdom, deploying as an LNO to J2/Horn of Africa, USCENTCOM, Camp Lemonier, Djibouti; served 191 days Joint Task Force Bravo, Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras as the Director of Intelligence; and served 14 months at United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Headquarters-Forward, Goma, DRC as the J-2. Ms Alley has extensive travel experience having lived in or visited 30+ countries worldwide.
During Ms Alley’s last 4 years, she served a Professor of Practice, National Intelligence University, Washington DC, honing her higher education teaching skills. Her areas of expertise are Sub-Saharan African Affairs, Global Security/Conflict Mitigation, Information Warfare, and International Illicit Trafficking.
She also recently published in Criminalized Power Structures: The Overlooked Enemies of Peace, edited by Michael Dziedzic, 2016.
Ms Alley accomplished her Master’s in National Security/Sub-Saharan African Affairs at Naval Postgraduate School. She is fluent in Spanish, and has proficiency in French, and both Brazilian and European Portuguese, and was frequently sought after for her cultural and language expertise.
